2014 PEI Beer Festival

This September 5th and 6th, a Friday & Saturday, sees the PEI Beer Festival return, promising "another amazing weekend of beer tasting, food pairings and entertainment." This year, the festival will be held indoors, at the Delta Prince Edward - which, after undergoing renovations last year, is quite a nice & modern spot. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Tuesday, August 12th, at 11:00AM at www.beerfestpei.ca as well as the PEI Brewing Company on Kensington Road. There are also fest + hotel packages available through the Delta. There are three different tasting sessions to choose from: Friday evening, Sept. 5th, Saturday afternoon, Sept 6th, and Saturday evening, Sept 6th. Afternoon sessions are $30, and evening ones are $40. Tickets include all beer samples, live entertainment, special cask contests (no clue what that is yet), games and more. Ticket prices also include a service fee and taxes, of course.

ACME California IPA

I really got onto hop-heavy beers this summer... kind of by accident, too. This ACME brew by California's North Coast Brewing Company is from one of my visits this summer to Premier Wine & Spirits in Halifax. It has a nice golden copper colour that clears after a couple of minutes. Its white head is decent. It keeps a 2mm skim of head on top and an inch or so of lacing follows it down to the bottom. I was expecting more from the smell, given previous brews I had on my recent IPA kick. It's not very fragrant. I get a bit of orange and malt / caramel. The taste is less than I expected, too. It tastes like a bit of orange, and a little of something like peach/mango/papaya, added to an amber or red ale. Not as refreshing and light as I thought, but pretty good. Aftertaste has a bit of apricot. The feel is good. It's not as bitter as its fresher counterparts, but it's not as refreshing either. It has a bit of a dry, sticky finish. Innis & Gunn India Pale Ale

This beer, for me, should be a winner. I'm a bit of a fan of Innis & Gunn, and a big fan of IPA's. I especially like American IPA's, but I like the milder, smoother, maltier British ones (like this should be), too. The colour of this beer is a bright copper - like you took the sheen from a new panel of copper, liquefied it, and poured it into a glass. A nice bit of head forms - a finger or so, and settles to a couple of millimeters. The slow carbonation in the glass keeps it up (and makes me think the beer may be a little viscous). There's a bit of webby lacing as the drink lowers. The bottle says there should be some orange aromas from the hops. My first whiff smelled like the heart of every other Innis and Gunn - mellow vanilla and oak. After a minute or so, as I got the ol' blog started up, some really faint orange aromas did come into play - kind of like a Terry's chocolate orange (but without the chocolate, if that makes any sense).
